Handcrafted Suede
Every Lustré piece is handcrafted from premium goatskin suede - a process that demands material expertise, precision, and the kind of care that only comes from working closely with a single, exceptional material.
What Makes Suede Handcrafted
Handcrafted suede outerwear is not simply “sewn by hand” - it is a complete approach to garment creation where every stage, from hide selection to final quality inspection, involves human judgement and skill. Unlike mass-produced suede garments that prioritise speed and volume, handcrafted pieces are made in small batches with individual attention to each hide, each cut, and each seam.
This matters because suede is a natural material. No two hides are identical - they vary in thickness, nap direction, colour absorption, and texture. Working with suede at the highest level requires the ability to read each hide, position pattern pieces to maximise quality, and adjust construction techniques to suit the specific characteristics of each piece.

The Process: Hide to Garment
1. Hide Selection
We source premium goatskin suede - the gold standard for luxury suede outerwear. Each hide is inspected for uniformity of nap, consistent thickness, and even dye absorption. Only hides that meet our standards make it into production. Learn more about our material standards in the Material Library.
2. Pattern Cutting
Pattern pieces are positioned on each hide individually, working around natural variations to ensure the most visible panels use the highest-quality areas. This step is where experience matters most - an expert pattern cutter can maximise both quality and material efficiency simultaneously.
3. Construction
Seams are sewn with precision, using techniques appropriate for suede's unique properties. Edges are finished cleanly, linings are attached with care, and hardware (zippers, buttons, snaps) is installed to ensure smooth operation and long-term durability. Our Atelier page details the craftsmanship standards we maintain.
4. Quality Inspection
Every finished garment undergoes a detailed quality review: checking seam integrity, hardware function, lining attachment, colour consistency, and overall fit against our size specifications. Pieces that do not meet our standards do not reach customers.
Why Handcrafted Matters
The difference between handcrafted and mass-produced suede outerwear is visible and tangible. Handcrafted pieces show consistent colour depth, clean seam lines, properly aligned nap direction across panels, and hardware that functions smoothly for years. Mass-produced suede often reveals inconsistent nap, uneven dye saturation, and shortcuts in finishing that become more apparent with wear.
For the wearer, this translates to garments that drape better, look richer, and last significantly longer. A handcrafted suede coat is a 10–15 year investment; a mass-produced one typically shows visible wear within 2–3 seasons.
